Bushing press fit

by Dennis A. Diederich
(Hurst,Tx)

Is there a general tolerance for how much smaller the O.D. of a bushing needs to be to press into the I.D. of another part?

Press a bushing
by: D Duncan

Hello Dennis
I checked my charts and this is what I came up with
In the 1-2 inch range

For a Drive Fit (light duty easily pressed in and removed) you need a .0005-.0007 press fit.

With a drive fit you should be able install bushing with light tapping with hammer

For a forced fit ( heavy duty more permanent )
you need a .002-.003 press fit

A forced fit would require a arbor of Hyd. press

A Tip: If you are installing the bushing in a hole freeze the bushing. this will cause the bushing to shrink making it much easer to press in

If you are pressing the bushing on a shaft freeze the shaft. If freezing the shaft is not feasible heat the bushing to around 350-400 deg in your oven

yes there is it depends on the size of the bushing. I have a chart if you can tell me the size of the bushing I can help.
I plane on putting this chart on my site ASAP
