Delta chuck removal

by Richard Foster
(Falmouth, MA)

I have an older Delta drill-press chuck that had a quill that has been sawed off. I'd like to remove the stub so I can use the chuck on my drill press. According to the chuck it's on a Jacobs taper. I drilled 1/2" down the stub and threaded the hole, put in a stud, slipped a tube and washer over the stud and screwed a nut on. I hoped that pulling the nut down really tight would pull the stub out, except that I pulled hard enough to begin to slide my lathe around. Even when I tapped on the end of the stud, nothing doing. Where can I go from here?
