Lathe Tool Bit Basics

Lathe Tool Bit Basics:

A single point tool is generally used for turning, boring, planning and shaping operations. For an efficient cutting operation, roughing and finishing, tool geometries are very critical. The geometries or tool shapes are not only related to the types of operations such as roughing or finishing, but, their inter-relationships are also very important for types of surface finish achieved during such operations.

Lathe cutting tools and its applications:There are several types of turning tools used in a turning operation. Some of the commonly known types of tools are:

• Turning tool (left hand or right hand): A left hand tool removes the metal when moving from left to right and vice versa for the right hand tool

• Round nose turning tool: used for grooving operations and can cut from left or right

• Facing tool (left or right hand): used primarily for facing operations

• Cut-off tool: Used for parting off a part from the blank after machining is completed

• Threading tool (inside or outside): used for threading operations

• Boring tool: used for enlarging a drilled hole
