This is a chart of some of the most commonly used machinist symbols.

Draftsmen use them to communicate with machinist. They are used to save the time it takes to right text instructions. Symbols also save space in the drawing and they make it easier to read foreign drawings because symbols are of international standards.

Which is a good thing because of today’s growing international trade agreements it’s not uncommon to find yourself working from a foreign blueprint.

This is only a small list but feel free to copy them for your use.

TheMachinery Handbook has a much more in depth list.
