Machinist Tapping Tips

I hope you find my machinist tapping tips page helpful.

Below is some tips to help out with the following tapping issues

Material welding its self to the tool. Breaking or chipping tap, poor thread quality, Low tap life

 

Tapping Trouble Sources
Using wrong style of tap: This will cause tap breakage or low quality threads
Using dull tap: will cause tap breakage a dull will be harder to start and require more torque to turn it.
Material hardness: if material is hard or brittle try a negative rake. If the material is very soft try adding  .003 or .004 to your drill size.
Drilled hole: the hole must be the correct size, check for work hardened spots in hole, check for excessive galling in hole, check hole condition must be round, straight and sides parallel
Oil or Coolant: This is a must tapping dry is not recommended except in some rare cases
