Learn about machinist tools.

The most commonly used ones and tips on how to use them. You can get a good idea of what you need in the beginning of your career as well as your future needs. Get information on Micrometers,Calipers, Protractors, Squares, Indicators, Gage Blocks, Vises, Parallels and much more!

Let’s touch on the subject of high dollar name brand tools vs. inexpensive imports.

I use both the name brands and the imports.

As far as accuracy is concerned the less expensive ones are just as accurate as the name brands. The big difference I have found is the imports have a shorter life span. A good example of this would be the common 1” Dial Indicator.

A brand name indicator such as Starret should last around 20 years of daily use under normal machine shop conditions if you don’t abuse it. At a cost of around $130.00.

A good import indicator will have a life expectancy of around 5-7 years at a cost of around $ 20.00.

This would be my suggestion to the beginning apprentice. Because you are struggling with a low pay check and the cost of trade school I would go with the lower cost imports in the beginning and upgrade to the brand name ones as my career and pay scale advanced.
