Let’s touch on the subject of high dollar name brand tools vs. inexpensive imports. I use both the name brands and the imports. As far as accuracy is concerned the less expensive ones are just as accurate as the name brands. The big difference I have found is the imports have a shorter life span. A good example of this would be the common 1” Dial Indicator. A brand name indicator such as Starrett should last around 20 years of daily use under normal machine shop conditions if you don’t abuse it. At a cost of around $130.00. A good import indicator will have a life expectancy of around 5-7 years at a cost of around $ 20.00. This would be my suggestion to the beginning apprentice. Because you are struggling with a low pay check and the cost of trade school I would go with the lower cost imports in the beginning and upgrade to the brand name ones as my career and pay scale advanced.
