Speeds Feeds Charts Formulas and Terminology

These are handy little formulas to help you get started out.

 

Over the years I have learned that after a while you get the feel of speeds and feeds.

You will know if  it’s right or not by the chip, sound and feel of the machine.

 

Speeds and Feeds Terminology
RPM = Revolutions per minute
SFM = Surface feet per minute
IPM = Inches per minute
Chip load = The amount each flute cuts per revolution of the cutter

 

 

 

Speeds and Feeds Formulas
RPM = SFM x 3.82 divided by tool diameter
IPM  = RPM x # of flutes x chip load
SFM = .262 x tool diameter x RPM
Chip Load = IPM divided by RPM x # of flutes
