What machine for this application?

by Mike
(Boulder, CO)

Hello,
I work for a fast growing small company which fabricates and assembles extruded aluminum housings for LED lights. We need to drill and tap up to 15 (.089 and .140) holes in 4' and 8' X 1.5" extrusions. Spacing of holes varies by job. It is time to step up from hand drills, templates and taps to make our delivery quotas. What would be our best machine type for this application? We need to produce 5000 pieces in about a month for this project alone. Thank you for your recommendations and any advice.
Mike

Machine for this application

I think the best way woyld be either a large VMC (Vertical Machining Center) or a bridge mill. For a 4' X 8" part you need something that you can get the entire part onto so it can be done in one operation (don't have to flip the part around). A HMC (Horizontal Machining Center) or a CNC Horizontal boring mill could also do the job. Do you have other parts that could be done on a machine like this?
